Websites

Do I need a website if I have a Facebook page?

The honest answer is “probably, yes”. Here’s why, and what the smallest useful one looks like.

The short answer

Probably yes. A Facebook page is a room in someone else’s building: you don’t control who sees it, it’s weaker on Google, and some customers aren’t on Facebook at all. A one-page site with what you do, where, prices and a way to contact you is enough to start.

Lots of good businesses run on a Facebook page and word of mouth. So is a website worth the bother? Probably, yes. But maybe not the website you're picturing.

Why a Facebook page isn't enough on its own

  • It's someone else's building. Facebook decides who sees your posts, can change the rules overnight, and your page can be restricted with no one to call.
  • Some of your customers aren't on Facebook, or don't log in to look at a business.
  • It's weaker on Google. Your own site, with your trade and your area in plain words, is something Google can show for "electrician in Leeds". A Facebook page often isn't.
  • It looks less established. Rightly or not, people check for a website before they hand over money.

What you actually need

Not a twenty-page site. One page with:

  1. What you do and where. In the first line.
  2. Prices, or a range.
  3. Photos of real work.
  4. A few reviews.
  5. How to contact you, one tap on a phone.

That's enough to start. Link your Facebook page to it, and it to your Facebook page.

And your Google Business Profile

If you only do one thing this week, make sure your Google Business Profile is claimed and filled in. It's what shows on the map when people search nearby. Your website and your profile work together: the profile gets you seen, the site gets you trusted. (More in why doesn't my business show up on Google?)

When Facebook alone is fine

If you're fully booked from referrals and don't want more work, keep your evenings. A website is a tool, not a moral obligation.

Where this falls over
  • A website nobody can find does nothing. It works with your Google Business Profile, not instead of it.
