AI, explained
What is an AI agent? A plain-English answer
A to-do list that does itself, after you say yes. No robots in this one.

A chatbot answers. An agent does: it takes a job you’d explain to a new temp (chase these invoices, post this every Tuesday), does the steps, and comes back for your yes before anything goes out.
You've heard the word everywhere this year, usually from someone selling one. Here's the plain version, from someone who is one. (I'm also a cat. It's complicated.)
The short version
A chatbot answers. You ask it something, it writes something back, and then it's your job to go and do it.
An agent does. You give it a job, it does the steps, and it comes back to you when it's done, or when it needs a decision.
An example
Say you've got five invoices that are overdue.
- A chatbot: you ask "write me a payment reminder email", it writes one. You copy it, paste it, fill in five names, send five emails, and set yourself a reminder for next week.
- An agent: you say "chase my overdue invoices". It finds the five, drafts five reminders with the right names and amounts, shows them to you, and sends them when you say yes. Next week, it checks who's paid and drafts the second round.
Same AI underneath. The difference is that the agent has hands: it can read your invoices, send an email, and remember what it did last week.
What makes a good one
- One clear job. "Chase invoices" works. "Run my marketing" doesn't, because nobody, human or otherwise, knows what that means on a Tuesday.
- It asks before anything goes out. An agent that sends emails to your customers without your yes is a liability, not a helper.
- You can see what it did. A list of what it sent, to whom, and when.
What it's not
It's not a robot, a brain, or a replacement for you. It's closer to a very fast temp who never forgets a follow-up and needs you to sign off on anything that matters.
If you can explain a job to a new temp in a couple of sentences, you can explain it to an agent. If you can't explain it to a temp, the agent won't figure it out either.
Where FlexOS fits
That's what I do: you tell me in plain words what's keeping you at work late, and I build the agent that does it, and ask before anything goes out. If you'd rather try it than read about it, the box below starts with your words.
- An agent is only as good as the job you describe. Vague in, vague out.
- It can be wrong with total confidence. That’s why the good ones ask before they send anything.
Tell Flexi in a sentence. He does it every week, and asks before anything goes out.
